materials Wood, printed posters, tape, performance location Tuinvereniging Streven naar Verbetering, Rotterdam Architecture Month

This site-specific intervention took place at Tuinvereniging Streven naar Verbetering in Rotterdam during Rotterdam Architecture Month. On arrival, a striking contradiction set the tone: a tall, closed fence protecting the space, while a sign just behind it read, “Everybody Welcome.” That tension—between invitation and exclusion—became the core of the work.

I recreated a section of a nearby prison wall and designed posters inspired by local signage. Each poster subtly rephrased or questioned the garden association’s messaging, playing with the visual codes of the neighborhood. Over four hours, I performed as a worker, pasting the posters onto the wall in layers. The act was repetitive and disruptive, gradually building a visual noise that unsettled the clarity of the original message.

The performance unfolded slowly, leaving room for casual conversations with passersby—some local residents, some with a connection to the garden. Their questions and reactions became part of the piece, turning it into a local scenography where environment, community, and performer continuously shaped one another.

The work asks: What does it mean to be open, and who decides that openness? How do fences, signs, and repetition guide behavior and perception? And how might we reimagine community spaces without sacrificing safety for inclusion—or inclusion for safety?
